Drakensberg – December 2020

27 January 2021| , ,

After a pretty crazy year, we were counting down the days until our annual festive holiday to Champagne Sports Resort in the Drakensberg mountains. We have been going to this resort since SJ was born, and this year we spent months thinking it would never happen and at the last minute, we were so lucky to get the go ahead and confirm our annual weeks timeshare. And what a blessing it was! We arrived just before the second wave of the virus hit, and we felt really safe being away from home.

This week in the mountains is so relaxing for us – time in the fresh mountain air, uninterrupted time as a family and often with special friends too. This year, we were blessed to share this week with a special family and we had the luck of having chalets right next door to each other. Being in the timeshare chalets allowed us to enjoy a safe time out and getaway with limited time and exposure to other people during these Covid times. We spent most of our days by the pool, in our own little corner, away from any crowds (although the resort was very quiet compared to their normal peak season), we wore masks at all times (except when tanning, swimming and eating – and quick photos), and besides one evening in the restaurant, we spent afternoons, evenings and all other meals in our chalet. We were really impressed with the strict protocols and regulations in place – all staff wore masks and correctly, everything was sanitised every time it was used or touched, and tables and chairs were very well distanced. The Kids Club was open with very strict regulations which our kids used for outdoor craft activities. The benefit of the berg mountains is to be outdoors and we were blessed with amazing weather too.

We spent our days lying by the pool, playing tennis, golf and riding bikes, playing Uno (the new favourite game again!), relaxing picnics outside and sunset braais together. It really was the most peaceful week away, and quality time for our two families – the kids, the families and the couples. And I may have fallen in love with a little man named, Frankie.

Little did we know that this family would become our “lockdown bubble” for the next few weeks too. A real blessing for us all.
