Goal Setting Getaway

22 January 2020| ,

January 1st.

A fresh new year. A fresh new start.

Every year, in the first week of January, MC and I take a few days away to spend some quality time together after the craziness of the Christmas rush, and the very long holidays with our precious girls. We thrive off this quality time together, uninterrupted, starting the year with clear minds and happy hearts.

We also take this time to plan our year. To sit down and set out goals for ourselves and for our family.

A few years back, I was inspired by Shay Cochrane and her husband Graeme, as they took a few days off at the end of each year to set goals for their businesses and map out their year ahead. MC and I both agreed that we would make this an annual trip and after our first Goal Setting Getaway in January 2018, we were both amazed at how much we got done, and how motivated we were for the year ahead.

This is now one of our favourite annual traditions.

Where? What? How?

Each year, we book three nights in Cape Town and almost always in the first week of January. The first week of January is when we like to plan and get everything sorted for the year ahead. It is also the week before MC goes back to work and out girls start school, and our nanny and au pair are back from their holiday break too so we have wonderful people to help us with our girls. We choose Cape Town because it is the most beautiful city with lots of divine places to eat, Summer sunshine to enjoy and close enough to be away from home but close by too.

This year, we stayed at our gorgeous friend, Lesley Sykes new boutique hotel, Pineapple House. Les and her husband, Rupert bought and renovated the property, converting it into a beautiful boutique hotel. With the most incredible decor, friendliest and hospitable staff, and very convenient location in Fresnaye, we were completely wow’ed by this little slice of paradise. We appreciated all the little finer details, pineapple spoons, personal bottles of body wash, incredible, colourful decor, Victoria Verbaan artwork and the most delicious breakfast spread each morning. You have to pop in to visit and we cannot wait to go back when we are next in Cape Town.

The main purpose of our trip is to set out goals and plan our year ahead. We both use our Cultivate What Matters Powersheets and we mark our time each morning and each afternoon to work on our goal-setting prep work, working on what worked and din’t work in the previous year, rating our different areas of life on a scale from 1-10, and setting up our vision boards and bigger picture goals for the year. We work on our own for a few sessions and then we brainstorm and put our heads together to work on the goals and ideas for our marriage, our family and our home. We discuss and plan our holidays, businesses, finances and budget and finally, we sit down and map out our calendars for the year. I’m not going to lie, it’s pretty full on.

And on top of this, we make time to spend time together visiting our favourite restaurants, eat delicious sushi, drinks on the harbour, lunch and massages in the wine lands, and some sunshine on the beach.

The year ahead for us is a busy one, and a big step to laying the foundation for our family. It’s a year that brings bold business decisions, watching our pennies and spending wisely, launching the iconic building MC has been working on, taking on a new role at the girls school, and witnessing MC’s younger sister marry the man of her dreams. We cannot wait to dive in with servant and expectant hearts, and keeping our eyes and hearts set on the vision we have for us.

2020 – the year of plenty.

Do you set goals each year? With or without your other half?
